Ecommerce SEO in Brief
E-commerce SEO in Brief
With the growth in e-commerce in the past few years, more retailers today are beginning to understand the potential of it and are trying to do the best they can in order to maximize their profits. Optimizing an e-commerce website for the search engines can surely be a challenge. However, with just a little help and some research it is possible to overcome this difficulty. There are several non e-commerce websites that often count on having links from other websites to their pages in order to get a higher ranking in search engines. Though this might work for the websites that are content oriented, when it comes to e-commerce websites, this step never really works.
On Site Optimization
One of the key elements for any e-commerce website that wants to get higher traffic from the search engines is on-site optimization. Usually the search engines use robots or software which view the website for ranking. These robots have to then determine what the website is about based on the content which is found there. However, if the website is not optimized properly it could land in search results which would not be able to generate any potential buyers.
Given below are a few tips in order to optimize the e-commerce websites:
- Do not use the same product descriptions as the manufacturer. Though this might save a lot of time, it would not improve the rankings of the site. The rankings would always be higher for original content. Each product should have a unique description.
- The database should have a field for SEO keywords. The keyword field should be displayed in the body of the content, meta tags and the title tags.
- Single keywords tend to work better for the products page. Always optimize on the plural keywords for the other SEO pages like the homepage and the landing pages.
- Ensure that the URLs are SEO friendly as well. The keywords and the product names should be used in the URL rather than in the Ids.
- Ensure that all the products are placed just two or three clicks away from the main homepage. The products should be as close as possible to the page having the highest PageRank.
- For every web page the meta tags which are used should be totally unique. Do not fill them up with keywords which would be unrelated to the content of that page.
- For the description meta tags, use unique keywords. The content meta tag on every product page should have a product description.
- Product reviews should be used for generating unique content.
- Use many internal links since these have a greater chance of being followed by users as well as the spiders of search engines.
These were some of the main tips for E-commerce SEO. Basically, SEO to be used for e-commerce sites is significantly different than the other sites since e-commerce sites are different in nature than the regular sites and hence requires special attention.
