The Growth of ecommerce

Basically e-commerce is the use of the internet for purchasing or for selling. It is the commerce for this era of globalization, an era where the telecommunications network and the internet make it possible to sell and purchase products without having to exchange physical bank notes.

It is an electronic market which is operated through computers. E-commerce can be applied to any steps which are involved in commerce, finding a buyer, making a sale, handling insurance, taxes, tariffs, insurance, notification of deliveries, payments etc. All of these can be done now over the internet in a safe manner.

The future of e-commerce is very bright, there is no doubt about it. Until only  a few years ago, e-commerce had been just a buzzword. However, e-commerce is a standard part of our vocabulary as wholesale or retail.

Today businesses prefer to do their business online. Even those businesses that have their own physical stores today also have an online store for better convenience.

The Growth

Like with any other paradigm shift, there is always an introductory phase where only a few are involved. The internet itself had been fairly new to most people till about ten years ago.

We might have our own email address but online shopping was unheard of and not many were ready to take the risk. People were mainly concerned about their security and especially when it came to their private information like credit cards.

In the new millennium ecommerce really began to take off in a big way. There had been a lot of advertising involved over the newspapers, magazines, radio and televisions which really helped. There had been a rush among the retailers to become the next .com success and many of these start-up businesses did not really make it while some of the, made it a big success story.

The future is certainly bright. The next phase in ecommerce is just emerging with the launch of the social networking sites. Some of these revolutionary sites are forging the way to create a strong future of ecommerce.

Companies can use their advertising money towards individuals that have similar interests. This creates a positive scenario for the users as well as the businesses and sets the stage for the growth of ecommerce. More people today are comfortable making their purchases online.

Several researches and studies have been done on e-commerce in the past few years which go to prove that the industry has grown at a rapid pace. B2c ecommerce too continues to grow with a double digit growth rate each year mainly because the sales are shifting away from the physical stores and also because online shoppers are more comfortable purchasing online.

However, there are still a few challenges which are faced by retailers even though the continued growth of e-commerce is a fact. Online stores are still considered as the second choice for most shoppers and online retailing is considered to be seasonal. There is still a long way to go for e-commerce before it reaches its peak.
