About WEF — World E-Commerce Forum

Advancing Global E-Commerce, Digital Business, Innovation, and International Professional Excellence Since 1996

The World E-Commerce Forum (WEF) is an international organization dedicated to advancing electronic commerce, electronic business, digital innovation, international trade, professional education, and global cooperation. The Forum traces its origins to a leadership institute established in 1996, which focused on business principles, executive education, international management, and the emerging opportunities presented by electronic commerce and internet-based business.

For three decades, the World E-Commerce Forum has promoted the exchange of knowledge, development of professional competencies, and advancement of international business standards that support the growth of the global digital economy.

Our History and International Foundations

The World E-Commerce Forum was originally inspired by the international policy initiatives and work of leading intergovernmental organizations involved in global electronic commerce, international trade, intellectual property, and economic development. These organizations included:

  • World Trade Organization (WTO) — Promoting international trade, market access, and rules-based global commerce.

  • United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) — Advancing international legal frameworks for electronic transactions, commercial contracts, and cross-border trade.

  • Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) — Supporting economic cooperation, digital economy policy, innovation, and international business development.

  • World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) — Promoting the protection of intellectual property, innovation, technology, and creative enterprise in the global marketplace.

The Forum was established to help business executives, policymakers, entrepreneurs, educators, and international e-commerce strategists better understand the global policies, legal frameworks, technologies, and economic developments affecting electronic business.

By connecting international policy discussions with practical business strategy, the World E-Commerce Forum developed an educational platform for sharing emerging ideas, management techniques, and innovative approaches to conducting business in the digital economy.

Historic International Conferences and Global Recognition

The World E-Commerce Forum's early international meetings were held in London, United Kingdom, with the inaugural proceedings opened by Patricia Hewitt, MP, who served as a British government minister with responsibilities relating to electronic commerce.

These historic gatherings attracted several hundred delegates representing business, government, academia, and technology organizations from Europe, the United States, the Asia-Pacific region, Russia, and other international markets.

The conferences generated substantial international media attention, with coverage reported across major news organizations and business publications, including CNN, BBC, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Australian Broadcasting, Israeli television, and international electronic trade publications.

The Forum's early conferences helped bring attention to the growing importance of digital trade, electronic transactions, online marketplaces, international commercial law, and the strategic transformation of traditional business models.

International Leadership and Founding Pioneers

The World E-Commerce Forum's founding leadership brought together prominent representatives of international electronic commerce associations, telecommunications organizations, universities, professional societies, and international legal institutions.

Its founding executive committee included leaders associated with the Asia Oceania Electronic Marketplace Association, European E-Commerce Association, International Society of Professionals in E-Commerce, United Nations international trade law initiatives, and academic institutions specializing in emerging digital business education.

These pioneers helped establish the Forum's original commitment to international cooperation, professional development, quality education, and the advancement of electronic commerce as a recognized field of global business expertise.

Professional Education, Qualifications, and International Standards

Professional education and the recognition of specialized competencies have remained important elements of the World E-Commerce Forum's mission.

The Forum's training and professional development initiatives have historically received recognition and certification through the IBS International Board of Standards, including programs associated with ISO 29990, the international standard formerly addressing learning services for non-formal education and training.

As international education and training frameworks have evolved, contemporary quality management and learning services standards include:

  • ISO 9001 — Quality Management Systems.

  • ISO 21001 — Management Systems for Educational Organizations.

  • ISO 29993 — Learning Services Outside Formal Education.

The World E-Commerce Forum supports the advancement of professional qualifications, charter designations, executive education, continuing professional development, and competency-based recognition in electronic commerce and related business disciplines.

The Forum also recognizes the importance of accredited academic education, professional examinations, practical experience, ethical business practices, and internationally accepted educational quality standards.

Our Mission

The mission of the World E-Commerce Forum is to promote international cooperation, innovation, professional excellence, and the advancement of electronic commerce and digital business through education, leadership, professional standards, and the exchange of global knowledge.

The Forum seeks to connect business leaders, entrepreneurs, technology professionals, educators, legal experts, and policymakers while supporting the development of a prosperous, innovative, and globally connected digital economy.

Our Vision for the Future

The World E-Commerce Forum recognizes that the digital economy continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace. Technologies and business models that were emerging in the 1990s have transformed into essential components of international commerce and economic development.

Today, the Forum's areas of interest extend across artificial intelligence, financial technology, digital currencies, blockchain, cybersecurity, electronic contracting, intellectual property, online marketplaces, international digital trade, and emerging technologies that influence business and society.

The Forum remains committed to promoting knowledge, responsible innovation, international collaboration, professional development, and the exchange of ideas that empower individuals, institutions, and businesses to participate successfully in the global economy.

Our Commitment to Global Excellence

From its leadership institute origins in 1996 to its development as an international e-commerce forum, WEF represents a longstanding commitment to education, innovation, international cooperation, and professional excellence.

By bringing together the principles of international trade, business management, digital technology, professional qualifications, and global policy, the World E-Commerce Forum seeks to strengthen the knowledge and capabilities of professionals and organizations operating in an increasingly interconnected world.
